Marine geologists study rocks dredged from the seafloor, or cored from beneath the seafloor. These rocks provide valuable information about the development of sedimentary basins, continental blocks, oceanic crustal rocks, and the plate tectonic forces that have deformed them.

Marine geochemists focus on understanding the chemical properties and interactions between submarine volcanic rocks, magmatic-hydrothermal emissions into the ocean, and associated mineral deposits.

Marine geophysicists use remote sensing techniques to determine the physical properties and structure of rocks on and beneath the seafloor.
