GNS Green Hydrogen 6559 v3

We're working with leaders across industries, business and science to target our future research.

Together we will shape the future of green hydrogen in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Research for real needs

To ensure that our hydrogen research remains aligned with industry and user needs, we constantly collaborate to find science solutions to their challenges.

Our most recent collaboration workshop, held on 20 June 2024 at the National Isotope Centre, brought together representatives from key organizations including Coregas, FABRUM, Bspkl, Hiringa Energy, BOC South Pacific, Hyundai Motors New Zealand, Beca, Ara Ake, Worley, the New Zealand Defence Force, The MacDiarmid Institute, the New Zealand Product Accelerator, Callaghan Innovation, University of Auckland, University of Waikato and Victoria University of Wellington.

We want to ensure our research is relevant to industry, next-users, and end-users, and strong research-industry partnerships are key to achieving this.

Objectives and Outcomes

The workshop had two primary objectives

  1. update stakeholders on our latest science insights as our five-year green hydrogen research programme is reaching its final stages,
  2. gather deeper insights on the challenges and priorities for green hydrogen in the near and distant future.

The discussions provided invaluable perspectives that will help shape the research questions necessary to facilitate the broader adoption of green hydrogen in New Zealand over the coming decades.

A highlight of the workshop was the opportunity for attendees to tour our new state-of-the-art green hydrogen lab, which is an integral part of our current research programme.

Local laboratory to accelerate progress

This lab is poised to play a critical role in the country's energy transition by providing our new hydrogen purity assay service. This service, established to support New Zealand's emerging hydrogen economy, provides independent, affordable, and rapid testing of hydrogen samples.

This capability has been long sought after by the industry who previously had to wait and pay for international services. Now our hydrogen experts at GNS can not only provide them quicker and cheaper services, they also provide more detailed advice that aren't the standard offering for larger-scale testing labs overseas.

The lab is the latest addition in the extensive range of independent assay services that GNS Science is renowned for.

The team at GNS has not only been supporting us with respect to producing quality and validation results, but also helping us interpret those results, which has been really helpful along the way.

Dan Kahn Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder Hiringa Energy

Our team at GNS are excited to continue our collaboration with industry leaders to drive forward the sustainable energy transition in Aotearoa New Zealand.
