Aotearoa New Zealand Marine Geophysics Workshop

The two-day workshop discussed the present state, and future of, marine geophysics research in New Zealand.
Wellington, New Zealand, 29 – 30th August 2023
Cross-continent collaboration
Over 30 researchers and representatives from GNS Science, NIWA, Victoria University Wellington, University of Tasmania, Auckland University of Technology, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, New Zealand Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, and Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand met last week to discuss the current state and future projects in the field of marine geophysics.
A key focus of this workshop was to discuss how we can increase collaboration across disciplines, and across regions, and expand our research networks to maximise the value and impact of our science.

Breaking down barriers
The group focused on the key challenges that we face in the marine realm, and how we can increase opportunities for students in seagoing expeditions going forward.
A key recurring message during the two days was on the importance of supporting ocean literacy for the public and decision-makers. Specifically, the team dived into how the scientific effort can be better represented and considered in the decision-making regarding the ocean and its resources.
The workshop also discussed how to better advocate and demonstrate New Zealand's critical need for future marine research.
