Raukumara Basin petroleum system analogues, East Coast, New Zealand

Raukumara Basin field trip photo

The northern part of the East Coast region provides an uplifted window on the likely petroleum system elements of the Raukumara Basin, with analogues for basement rocks, source and reservoir rocks and an understanding of the tectonic development of eastern New Zealand. On this one to five day field trip we visit an oil pool/seep, typical source rocks, likely reservoir rock analogues of Miocene age (deep water and shelfal) and discuss what the undrilled 10+ km of sedimentary fill of this “frontier basin” probably comprises and why.
