Sliding Lands Hōretireti Whenua: Landslide Impacts pillar
The Landslide Impacts pillar focuses on what happens when landslides affect people, communities, buildings, infrastructure, and the economy.
Aim
To improve our understanding of landslide consequences and support better risk-informed decision-making across Aotearoa New Zealand.
How?
Research themes include:
- Understanding how landslides affect people, buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.
- Improving understanding of social vulnerability and how different communities may experience and recover from landslide events.
- Assessing the potential economic and social impacts of future landslide events.
- Understanding what makes impact-based forecasts useful for decision-makers and emergency managers.
- Testing and refining impact models through detailed studies in selected case-study areas.
Key outputs
- Improved vulnerability models for people, buildings, and infrastructure.
- National-scale landslide risk analysis, and associated workflows
- Estimates of social and economic impacts.
- Improved impact-based modelling
- Improved understanding of community vulnerability and resilience.
The research uses RiskScape™ and the MERIT tool to help understand and quantify the potential impacts of landslide events.
