Sliding Lands Hōretireti Whenua: Case studies
The Hōretireti Whenua / Sliding Lands programme includes two case studies in Tairāwhiti and Auckland. These case studies help test and refine the programme's models, tools, and research to ensure they are practical, fit for purpose, and useful for decision makers and communities.
Tairāwhiti
The Tairāwhiti case study focuses on iwi and recognises the unique research, science, and innovation contributions of Ngāti Porou. Guided by Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, the research will:
- Capture lessons from recent landslide events.
- Co-design landslide preparedness and response frameworks with iwi, hapū, and communities.
- Support natural hazard education and preparedness in Kura Kaupapa Māori and schools.
- Strengthen community resilience to future landslide events.
Auckland
The Auckland case study focuses on understanding the social and economic impacts of landslides in an urban environment, including the potential effects of climate change.
The research will:
- Assess risks to people, businesses, and communities.
- Examine the economic and social consequences of landslides.
- Evaluate how landslide information supports decision-making.
- Test whether improved hazard, impact, and risk models lead to better planning and resilience outcomes.
