What is Geoheat?
The term “Geoheat” describes geothermal heating and cooling. It is the use of natural heat stored in the ground for heating and/or cooling applications. It provides a local and efficient source of energy. It is different to geothermal electricity generation where high subsurface temperatures are used, converting high pressure steam into electricity.
Usable geoheat ranges from ambient groundwater temperatures to very hot temperatures. All subsurface temperatures can be used through a variety of available technologies and designs. Efficiencies are gained by using heat directly, i.e. no energy lost in converting to electricity, and through the stability of the ground temperatures (compared to surface temperatures which can vary dramatically with the weather and seasons).
The table below presents the spectrum of geothermal resources.
