Nanofabrication Laboratory

Nanofabrication 870 copy

The Nanofabrication Laboratory conducts research into micro/nano structured materials and their applications for both commercial and research purposes

The work undertaken in this lab is led by members of our Materials team and contributes to a multitude of projects that support New Zealand’s transition to a low carbon economy

Our work focuses on

  • Energy efficiency and storage:
Developing novel catalytic materials to improve the efficiency of green hydrogen production and storage in the form of ammonia by focussing on the synergistic use of physical and chemical techniques to modify the surface properties of materials.
  • Energy innovations:
Develop novel, proof-of-concept innovations for new ways of generating and sustainably using energy with our world-class materials science expertise.

Our expertise includes both chemical and physical fabrication of functional materials with potential for mass production.

 Our Equipment

Our lab is equipped as a dedicated nanofabrication laboratory, which includes facilities capable of preparing and synthesis micro/nano structured materials through both physical and chemical procedures.

Our unique two custom-made plasma arc-discharge apparatus allow for the new design and exploration of novel powder-form micro/nano materials with potential for mass production.

We’ve patented some metal oxide structures (ZnO, WO3, carbon nanotubes…… WO/2010/120196) synthesized by this apparatus with applications in sensors, CO2 conversion, functional paint surface.

Our wet chemistry workspace is equipped with standard fume cupboards along with standard chemistry lab instrument including Schlenk line, high speed centrifuge, ultrasonicator, analytical balances and forced convection oven.

Our laboratory is designed for a wide range of sample preparation within a secure, safe and contaminant-free environment.

Our Clients

The lab supports the work of a wide range of research within the Energy Future Theme at GNS Science. The laboratory space is available to both internal researchers and external collaborators and university students.

Our Location

We are located at the National Isotope Centre (NIC) at the Gracefield campus of GNS Science, Lower Hutt
