Our Critical Minerals

New Zealand’s first Critical Minerals List was released by the New Zealand Government in 2025. The way we use minerals has evolved significantly over time, and modern technologies now depend on a greater diversity of minerals than at any other point in human history
Critical minerals are those identified by governments as essential for supporting modern technology, maintaining and developing infrastructure, or providing economic benefits. The specific minerals classified as critical vary between countries, depending on local supply, abundance, and projected demand. They play a pivotal role in both industrialized and developing economies. Most nations maintain a critical minerals list, these are regularly updated by government economists and earth scientists in consultation with industry experts. Critical Minerals are essential for advancing technologies that will drive the decarbonization of the global economy, such as renewable energy systems, electric vehicles (EVs), rechargeable batteries, consumer electronics, telecommunications, specialty alloys, and defence technologies.
The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) shows where some of our known Critical Minerals are located. See a web map here(external link).
