Peter Benfell appointed as Interim Chief Executive for GNS Science
Peter Benfell, currently General Manager, Science at GNS Science has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive.
Peter Benfell, currently General Manager, Science at GNS Science has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive following the announcement that current Chief Executive Ian Simpson is stepping down later this month after more than five years at the helm.
GNS Science Chair Dr Nicola Crauford said Ian had made a huge contribution to GNS Science.
“GNS has made tremendous progress on a number of fronts thanks to Ian's leadership.
“Ian has led the organisation through some challenging times including a global pandemic. With our theme-based approached underpinned by several key strategies, GNS is well positioned to deliver enduring impact across all our stakeholders,” Dr Crauford said.
On announcing his departure, Ian Simpson said that when he joined GNS just over five years ago, his aim was to reset the organisational strategy so GNS could focus on strengths and grow financial capability so it could invest in people, systems, and infrastructure.

Peter Benfell re-joined GNS Science in 2018 as General Manager, Science. He has been responsible for the leadership and management of GNS’ research teams, as well as the quality and performance of our research projects and geohazard monitoring activities. Peter has more than more than 30 years’ experience in research, science and technology and its successful application.
For his part, Peter says he is excited and honoured.
“Having worked with GNS Science two decades ago and then re-joined in 2018, I can see how much we have grown as an organisation. We have an excellent strategy in place underpinned by our science. I’m excited about where we are going and honoured to lead the team over the coming months.”
The Board will begin the recruitment process for a permanent Chief Executive shortly.
