GNS Science welcomes the news that its merger with NIWA will come into effect by 1 July

The Minister of Science, Innovation, and Technology, Hon. Shane Reti, has announced that our two organisations will join to form the New Zealand Institute for Earth Science by 1 July.
The new entity, which will be commonly referred to as the Earth Science Institute (ESI), will support energy security and sustainability; develop land, marine and mineral resources; and improve our resilience to natural hazards and climate-related risks.
“It is exciting to now have tangible details about the new organisation,” says Chelydra Percy, GNS Chief Executive. “Coming together with NIWA as the Earth Science Institute is a positive and exciting move for science.”
“GNS and NIWA have been working together at pace to plan our move into the new Public Research Organisation.
“There is lots of work for us still to do, but I am confident in our ability to navigate this change together and have the ESI ready to launch by 1 July.”
GNS Board Chair, David Smol, has been appointed as Chair of the Earth Science Institute for a three-year term.
