Working in partnership with New Zealand Universities, GNS offers a range of opportunities for young people to experience earth science in the field and work alongside our world-leading scientists.

Upcoming MSc and PhD scholarships in geophysics

Announcing 2023-2026 Scholarships

Five one-year Masters in Science scholarships and one three-year PhD scholarship aligned with the Toka Tū Ake EQC Programme in Earthquake Seismology and Tectonic Geodesy are available at Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka.

A sixth one-year Masters in Science scholarship for research into Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is also available, as part of collaborative research on the Alpine Fault with the Australian National University.

Ahunuku Māori Summer Scholarship Programme

This scholarship is provided by GNS and Victoria University of Wellington. It provides university students of Māori descent with an opportunity to enhance their skills and gain valuable experience within the earth sciences field, with the guidance and support of our expert GNS Science researchers.

Summer Research Scholarships

GNS offers jointly funded summer research scholarships for undergraduate students enrolled at the following universities:


Summer studentships usually run for 3-4 months over the summer break and can be hosted by the university or at one of the GNS sites.

Post-grad research opportunities

Throughout the year, GNS offers students the opportunity to work with our team on a range of priority science projects and research. 

This work is tied into our major workstreams and varies from year to year; placements can be at any of our GNS locations - Auckland, Wairakei, Avalon, Gracefield or Dunedin.
