1:1 000 000 Geological Map of New Zealand

The new Geological Map of New Zealand 1:1 000 000 is now available. This 1:1 000 000 scale makes the map ideal for national level viewing. The new edition is available as a printed map and can be purchased from the Publications Store. It is also viewable through the New Zealand geology webmap client. GIS users can purchase the digital data which comes packaged with a choice of free GIS viewers or can access the data as a webmap service from GeoServer or ArcGIS Server.

In 2009, GNS Science began the compilation of new 1:1 000 000 (1:1M) geological maps covering New Zealand. The two maps aim to replace the 1st edition, published in 1972, and draw extensively from the completed QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand.

Each of the 21 QMAP geological maps has been simplified suitable for reproduction at 1:1M. This has involved redrawing and smoothing of complicated geological boundaries, removing small or very thin polygons and dense clusters of fault and other data.

The 1:1M geological map follows procedures established for the QMAP series maps and the international geological map interchange standard GeoSciML.

In 2008 the digital version of the 1st edition 1:1M Geological Map of New Zealand was one of the first to be served to the international OneGeology web portal. The map is hosted on a server in Wellington and can be accessed using web browser software from anywhere in the world with internet connectivity.

The 1:1M maps will be updated periodically as new data and interpretation become available.
