NZ and Japan to work together on hazards research
GNS Science and Hokkaido University have signed an agreement to work together on natural hazards.
The agreement formalises and broadens the existing relationship between the two institutions, and promotes cooperation and exchange of information and staff.
Existing collaboration includes research on erosion and sediment transfer on the East Coast of the North Island, and the impact of the recent lahar from Mount Ruapehu’s crater lake on the Whangehu River.
Hokkaido University is the oldest university in Japan, being founded in 1876. Located in the city of Sapporo on the northern island of Hokkaido, it is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan and is designated as one of Japan’s Seven National Universities. It has a strong reputation for research on natural hazards and isotope science.
As well as collaboration on research projects, the agreement facilitates the exchange of information, joint symposiums, joint supervision of Hokkaido University students, and exchanges of staff.
