Rock and Soil Mechanics Laboratory
The GNS Science Rock and Soil Mechanics Laboratory is a facility set up for the determination of the mechanical properties of rock and soil materials.
Current capabilities include the use of load frames, shear boxes, and consolidation frames at near surface stress levels to determine material strength at failure, deformation under loading, and investigate material performance under different stress conditions. Measured properties are mainly applied to landslide movement mechanisms and the behaviour of rock masses.
The current laboratory expansion programme will enable the measurement of rock properties at higher confining pressures and elevated temperatures.
