National Earthquake Information Database

The Earthquake Information Database (EID) provides raw and derived data related to earthquakes in New Zealand, to the public and researchers. This data aims to facilitate the creation of new knowledge through research into geological hazards, informing responses to geohazard events.

The EID consists of a number of datasets, including

  • The earthquake catalogue, which has information about earthquake occurrence such as location, magnitude and arrival times of seismic waves.
  • Moment tensors solutions, describes the magnitude and source mechanism of an earthquake, i.e. the geometry of how the fault ruptured in the earthquake.
  • The waveform archive, containing data from the digital seismic recordings.
  • Station metadata, holds information relating to the GeoNet sensor network.
  • Felt Reports, which are based on the intensity of shaking that people experience during an earthquake.
  • Strong motion data products, which are derived from strong-motion accelerometers that are located in major centres of population, near significant faults, or in different types of building structures.
  • Fault Rupture Models, a compilation of rupture models from the published literature in a common format.

The EID also includes predigital data, in particular historical seismograms and felt reports.
