  • Air-breathing, warm-blooded animals with hair or fur.
  • A spectacular range of marine mammals has been discovered in the South Island, including numerous whale and dolphin species.
  • A few bones of a tiny terrestrial mammal were found in Miocene (16 to 19 million year old) lake sediments in 2006. Before this discovery it had been thought that bats were the only terrestrial mammals to have existed in New Zealand prehistory
