GNS Science and Geo40 have today announced a geothermal coalition which will see them establish a physical presence in Tokyo. The move to open an office in Japan demonstrates the strength of New Zealand’s expertise in the geothermal space, and builds on GNS Science’s long-standing partnerships in Japan.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s network of DART buoys proved vital over the weekend as tsunami experts raced to analyse the tsunami threat to our coastlines following a large, explosive eruption at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano in Tonga.

Last month, GNS Science and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) held their first International Online Seminar, “Carbon Neutral Geothermal” to over 203 attendees from 21 countries. The seminar focused on the latest research and business trends in carbon neutral technology and geothermal energy.

While COP26 today focuses on science and innovation’s role in combating climate change, Antarctic researchers are preparing to drill into the ocean floor below the Ross Ice Shelf to discover if cutting greenhouse gas emissions avoids catastrophic melt of the icy continent.

While the impact of emissions on Antarctic ice melt may not become clear for another hundred years, the consequences of the climate decisions made this decade will be felt for centuries.
