Ocean Floor Exploration

Exploring the geology and marine resources under the ocean floor.

New Zealand is an island continent with 96% of its sovereign territory under water. The country’s territorial sea, EEZ and recently confirmed Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) cover more than 6,500,000 km2.

Ocean science at GNS Science is focused on exploration of New Zealand’s vast undersea realm. Our research provides valuable insights into the location of offshore resources and hazards, and the processes that affect them. This provides the foundations for informed and sustainable resource management and on-going economic growth and prosperity.
