Nationwide there are over 190 seismographs and 270 strong motion sensors, monitoring thousands of small shakes and many large quakes per year.
Our earthquake geologists are exploring major fault lines in earthquake prone regions, digging trenches across fault lines and analysing the geology. This shows how frequently major quakes have occurred and the resulting land deformation.
Continuous GPS is being used to monitor “slow” earthquakes, recording land movement down to a few millimetres.
