Safe Dams

Geological Setting

Definition of regional geological and tectonic setting of dam and reservoir area, in particular major geological structure, historical seismicity and contemporary crustal strain.

Site Characterisation

Investigation of foundation conditions at dam site, including sample drilling and definition of rock and soil mass properties, and provision of construction materials.

Earthquake Loads

Determination of return periods and ground response due to strong shaking from nearby large earthquakes and active fault displacement adjacent to dam structures

Reservoir Impact

Evaluation of hazards arising from landslides, slope instability, induced seismicity, seiching and volcanic hazards, where appropriate

Dam Safety Assurance

Assessment of foundation performance and infrequent loading conditions for ongoing safe dam performance, for surveillance, safety reviews and evaluating remedial options if necessary.
