National Groundwater Monitoring Programme

Long-term research and monitoring programme operated by GNS Science in collaboration with all of NZ regional authorities to: provide  a national perspective on groundwater monitoring used to define “baseline” groundwater quality; associates  groundwater quality with certain causes such as anthropogenic influence; develop best-practice methods for sampling and monitoring as well as groundwater quality data interpretation.

Mapping Groundwater Discharge into Rivers Using Radon

Understanding how surface waters and groundwaters interact is an integral component of managing the influence of nutrient inputs to water quality. The aim of this research was to establish the potential of radon for measuring groundwater and river water interaction in two North Island, New Zealand gravel bed rivers. Test studies were carried out in the Hutt and Mangatainoka Rivers in the lower North Island.

Installation of lysimeters for measuring recharge to groundwater

Lysimeters are instruments measuring the proportion of water that infiltrates though the soil, from irrigation and/or rainfall, and contributes to groundwater recharge. Acquired data, combined with rainfall monitoring is required by Regional Councils and other organisations for water resource management purposes, including calibration of groundwater models and policy development.

Rotorua Lakes Restoration Project

Lake Rotorua

A strategy to restore and protect the Rotorua lakes has been developped by Bay of Plenty Regional Council. GNS Science is involved as a project partner - to define and understand the groundwater cathment of Lake Rotorua, as knowing the extent of characteristics such as flow rates and length of water residence time of the catchment is vital to support decisions for remediation actions.
