Research

GNS, with CO2CRC and New Zealand government funding, has assessed New Zealand’s CO2 storage potential through three projects:

1. A high-level study funded jointly with CO2CRC that gave overview assessments of all New Zealand onshore basins (“satellite view”):

Edbrooke, S., Arnot, M., Funnell, R., Bland, K., and Field, B. 2009a. New Zealand carbon dioxide storage site assessment: Phase 1. Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies, Canberra, Australia, CO2CRC Publication Number: RPT08-1410. 74p. - 3.98 MB pdf

2. A closer look at most of our basins, again funded jointly with CO2CRC, which provided first-pass, quantitative storage assessments for selected regions (“helicopter view”):

Field, B., Arnot, M., Begg, J.M., Bland, K., Bunch, M., Doody, B., Edbrooke, S., Funnell, R., Griffin, A., King, P., Rattenbury, M.S., and Ricketts, B. 2009. New Zealand carbon dioxide storage site assessment: Phase 2. Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies, Canberra, Australia, CO2CRC Publication Number: RPT08-1579. - 3.5 MB pdf

3. A study funded by the New Zealand government (FRST) that assessed the storage options in the Taranaki-Waikato area, mainly onshore but also including Maui Field and offshore Waikato:

Funnell, R., King, P., Edbrooke, S., Bland, K. and Field, B. 2009. Opportunities for underground geological storage of CO2 in New Zealand - Report CCS-08/1 – Waikato and onshore Taranaki overview. GNS Science Report 2009/53. - 1.39 MB pdf
