Onshore Northland

Behind-arc tectonics, sediments and hydrocarbons from onshore Northland, New Zealand.

Northland Basin field trip photo

This three day fieldtrip provides an overview of the geology and potential petroleum systems of the Northland Basin. This “frontier basin” is contiguous with Taranaki Basin, a proven and successful hydrocarbon production region in New Zealand. The trip illustrates at several scales the 3-D geometry of passive margin sedimentation in a behind-arc tectonic system, and discusses implications for sediment distribution, trap geometry, fault seal and reservoir performance.
