This is a minimum 3 day field trip to view the Mid-Cretaceous rift basin sediments deposited in coastal plain and shallow marine settings that form an important source and reservoir successions in many New Zealand petroleum basins. Outcrops of these units are however limited, one of the best exposed occurring on Pitt Island, part of the Chatham Islands group some 850 km east of Christchurch.
