1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand (QMAP)

The QMAP project completed the last of 21 new 1:250 000 geological maps in 2012. The maps cover all of New Zealand and their accompanying texts describe each area’s geomorphology, stratigraphy, tectonic history, geological resources, geological hazards and engineering geology in general terms. The maps and texts are available in printed hardcopy and in as digital equivalents through Publication Sales.

Digital versions of the 21 individual QMAPs have been stitched into a single seamless GIS dataset, the 2014 Geological Map of New Zealand 1:250 000 (GNS Science Geological Map 1). Earlier individual maps have been updated to fit with later maps and the combined dataset has extended feature attributes and has undergone some consistency checking and data validation. The seamless Geological Map of New Zealand 1:250 000 GIS is available in digital format on DVD.

The digital geological map data are viewable through the New Zealand geology webmap client and are accessible through a web map service.
