What are they?

  • Winged, bipedal, warm-blooded, egg-laying, vertebrates.
  • A giant penguin found near Kawhia is about 40 million years old
  • The oldest penguin fossils in the world are from Waipara, and are 60 million years old
  • Other birds older than 30 000 years are rare and include an albatross and a pelican
  • From after 30 000 years ago there are many bird fossils including giant moa, eagles, kiwi, parrots and sea birds.
