Our happy winner!

Competition winnerCalgary-based geophysicist Surinder Dyal visited New Zealand recently as part of his prize in winning our latest seismic processing competition. Entries were marked on a series of criteria and Dyal’s processing and results were not only accurate, but were the easiest for a panel of geoscientists to interpret.

First prize was free use of Claritas software for one year and a trip to New Zealand.
Dyal has been delighted with his 12-months use of the software and has now bought licences to use it in his seismic processing businesses in Canada and India. Check www.mindsetgeo.com.

He says the competition was a great opportunity to get familiar with the software in a setting where there was some urgency to perform.

“I found the software very user-friendly and versatile. It’s also easy to customise for special tasks. You can do everything from the screen display.

“The software enables me to log-in from anywhere in the world and process datasets.

“Another plus for me has been the prompt responses I get from the help desk at GNS Science in New Zealand. “

We will run another competition in 2008, in conjunction with this year’s SEG conference. This time it will be a land-based dataset that entrants will be given to work with. Watch this space.

We have a winner !

GNS Science is pelase to announce that Surinder Dyal has won the 2006-07 Seismic Data Processing Contest. Surinder sucessfully processed a line from New Zealand's geologcally complex East Coast basin; based on five criteria - shallow and deep imaging, signal:noise ratio, demulitple quality and overall interpretatbility the three judges felt that Surinder's section was the best overall section that was received.

All the competition entries had to be processed using GNS Science's GLOBE Claritas software, and a year's free access to the software forms part of the the prize - as well as a trip for two to New Zealand.

"We were really pleased about the quality of the entrants" said Guy Maslen, who runs GNS Science's Seismic Processing Team. "We had expected more students to enter the contest, but it was primarily professionals who took part," Maslen continued. "The range of results was also interesting - all of the sections had unique, positive features which made the judging very close."

"We fully intend to run a second contest in 2007-08, and hopefully make this an annual event. We've already picked out some possible seismic lines to use," Maslen said. "They have to be interesting and challenging, but given New Zealand's location on a convergent margin, locating lines that fit the bill is relatively easy."

Training Course Update

As a result of demand we will be running the "Introduction to Seismic Processing" course in October 2007; the course will be run in using our newly completed training facility, which has ten networked PC workstations. The course is ideal for new seismic processors, or seismic data interpreters who need a deeper understanding of how seismic images are formed. We are also planning courses in Europe (June 2007) as well as Canada - contact the team for more details....
