GNS Science has unrivalled expertise in geological mapping, at both detailed and regional scales. We have over a century of experience in producing high quality geological maps of New Zealand and other areas such as Antarctica and the southwest Pacific.
Within New Zealand, the emphasis has recently changed from publishing maps at a scale of 1:50 000, to producing up-to-date national coverage at 1:250 000 scale (the QMAP series). This information is held in a geographic information systems (GIS) database. We also undertake site-specific mapping for engineering projects and other related applications.
GNS Science geologists have considerable experience in stratigraphy and structural geology of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks from Paleozoic to Quaternary, both in New Zealand and overseas. Our mapping staff also specialise in applying computer GIS to geological mapping, particularly for geological hazard and resource assessment.
