QMAP products

Published books and maps
Each completed QMAP is available as a 1:250 000 scale, high quality geological map folded into the back of a 44 to 74 page book. The books are explanatory guides to the geology of each area, containing summary descriptive information on all the geological mapping units, as well as the geomorphology, tectonic history, geological resources, engineering geology and geological hazards. The books are attractively illustrated with colour photographs and drawings, and have extensive references.
Extra folded and flat maps may be purchased separately.
All published QMAP sheets can be found here.

Digital images
(Raster and PDF)
(Scanned versions of map and book on CD)
Books are stored in the PDF format. Map images are provided as 8 and 24 bit georeferenced Tiff and high and low resolution MrSid images. These can be viewed in most GIS systems. Free viewer software is available for MrSid and PDF formats.

Vector GIS Data on CD
Geological data from published QMAP sheets are being made available as ArcGIS coverages and shapefiles . These data can be used in mainstream GIS software such as ArcInfo, ArcMap, ArcView and MapInfo, and included with each CD is the free GIS viewing software ArcReader which allows zooming, theme selection, searching and printing data. The data have rich attributes describing various parameters of each geological features e.g. rock types, age, stratigraphic affiliation for geological map units and movement sense, age and activity of faults. These attributes are searchable and enable customized selection and presentation of the data. The CDs contain the QMAP Data Dictionary and QMAP Metadata .

New Zealand's Geological Foundations graphic
This colour 300dpi A3 graphic (6Mb pdf format) appears in the introductory sections of the QMAP texts. The map is revised as research and the QMAP project progress. A written summary of the geological basement rocks of New Zealand is given in Mortimer (2004).
