GNS has three core areas of oceans expertise:
Marine geology includes
the application of petrology, sedimentology, paleontology and
isotope geology to the study of rocks from on and beneath the
seafloor. Samples come from ODP or oil exploration wells, and
dredges.
Marine geochemistry
is the study of properties and interactions of substances in the
marine environment. At GNS our focus is on fluid and mineral samples
collected from magmatic and hydrothermal systems located on submarine
arc volcanoes.
Marine geophysics uses
remote sensing techniques such as seismic reflection and refraction,
swath bathymetry, gravity, and magnetics to determine the physical
properties and structure of the rocks on and beneath the seafloor.
