Fig. 1. World Map (PDF) showing the location of divergent and convergent plate boundaries on the Earth's surface with their associated deep earthquakes. Also shown are the various volcanic arcs. Those with black labels include both intra-oceanic and island arcs which together equal about 22,000 km, mostly concentrated in the western Pacific region. Those arcs with gray labels are the continental arcs.
