GNS Stable Isotope Laboratory

About us

The GNS Stable Isotope Laboratory is a division of GNS Science and has been operating continuously since 1959. We are a part of New Zealand's National Isotope Center situated at Gracefield near Wellington. The laboratory continues the tradition of excellence of its founder, Dr T A Rafter, who built the first southern hemisphere mass spectrometer in the late 1950's. Our facilities are complemented by the multi-disciplined geological expertise available throughout the rest of GNS Science.

Our services include free technical advice on the suitability of your samples for stable isotope analyses and sampling advice as to how to collect samples. An interpretative report is also available on request. Our clients enjoy the benefits of our research expertise. We welcome collaborative research proposals and the opportunity to assist and contribute to research design.

This facility provides stable isotope analyses for researchers from universities and commercial organisations world-wide. The GNS Stable Isotope Laboratory also participates in a range of international ring-tests such as FIRMS and IAEA calibration tests, and in the past has made and supplied International Standards to the IAEA.

As well as the mass spectrometer facility comprising of 4 mass spectrometers and numerous peripherals, the GNS Stable Isotope Laboratory operates a modern, well-equipped sample processing laboratory. Our highly qualified team of scientists and technicians are able to process most inorganic and organic material for isotope analysis. We are committed to an ongoing programme of research to ensure that optimum levels of scientific accuracy are offered. We welcome collaborative research proposals and offer student training.
