Chris Hollis, a principal scientist at GNS Science in Lower Hutt, will be sailing as a radiolarian specialist on the upcoming Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Exp. 342 Paleogene Newfoundland Sediment Drifts. We are connecting with New Zealand schools so that students can follow the expedition online and possibly even have a chance to speak live with Chris or other scientists during the expedition via a ship-to-shore video link! Southwest Pacific IODP Workshop to be Held in Sydney on 9-12 October

Funding from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, Management International (IODP-MI) has been secured to hold an IODP workshop on scientific drilling in the Southwest Pacific. This workshop will be jointly hosted by the Australian-New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC) and the University of Sydney, and will be held on the 9th-12th October 2012 in Sydney, Australia. Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) - Importance for Understanding the Devastating Tsunami from the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

The deep sea scientific drilling vessel Chikyu, operated by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), will embark on Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 343 Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) from 1 April to 24 May 2012. Drilling in the Lesser Antilles will Improve Assessment of Risks Related to Volcanic Instability

From 3 March to 17 April 2012, an international team jointly led by Anne Le Friant, a CNRS researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (CNRS / Université Paris Diderot / IPGP) and by Ozamu Ishizuka of the Geological Survey of Japan will embark on an oceanographic campaign in the Lesser Antilles. Martin Jutzeler, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Otago, is participating on the expedition as a physical properties specialist. (14 March 2012)
