With legislation surrounding environmental impacts from marine resource use in New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in parliament, the Science Media Centre hosted a media event to examine issues of resource exploration, environmental risk, etc. in this region (22 May 2012)

Chris Hollis, a principal scientist at GNS Science in Lower Hutt, will be sailing as a radiolarian specialist on the upcoming Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Exp. 342 Paleogene Newfoundland Sediment Drifts. We are connecting with New Zealand schools so that students can follow the expedition online and possibly even have a chance to speak live with Chris or other scientists during the expedition via a ship-to-shore video link! The Otago Daily Times featured a press release on Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 343 Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project. Virginia Toy of Otago University is a structural geologist on the expedition. (13 April 2012)

Funding from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, Management International (IODP-MI) has been secured to hold an IODP workshop on scientific drilling in the Southwest Pacific. This workshop will be jointly hosted by the Australian-New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC) and the University of Sydney, and will be held on the 9^th-12^th October 2012 in Sydney, Australia. The deep sea scientific drilling vessel Chikyu, operated by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), will embark on Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 343 Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) from 1 April to 24 May 2012. Virginia Toy, a lecturer at the University of Otago, will sail as a structural geologist on the expedition. (14 March 2012)

A recent segment on Discovery Channel Canada's TV show "Daily Planet" featured IODP's Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) and upcoming Exp. 343 Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) (14 March 2012)

From 3 March to 17 April 2012, an international team jointly led by Anne Le Friant, a CNRS researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (CNRS / Université Paris Diderot / IPGP) and by Ozamu Ishizuka of the Geological Survey of Japan will embark on an oceanographic campaign in the Lesser Antilles. Martin Jutzeler, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Otago, is participating on the expedition as a physical properties specialist. (14 March 2012)
