International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) - National
New Zealand membership of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is led by GNS Science, Victoria University of Wellington, Otago, Canterbury, and Auckland Universities
New Zealand joined the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) in 2009 after strong support that arose out of interest in the Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP), Alpine Fault.
Applications to ICDP for training, workshops, or project funding may be submitted by any New Zealand scientist, and we encourage the development of new ideas and preproposals to ICDP.
The future structure of the New Zealand Continental Scientific Drilling Program (NZCDP) is still open to consultation.
The goal of NZCDP is to coordinate and enhance continental scientific drilling capability and projects within New Zealand.
The participating research institutions and key contacts are:
- GNS Science (Rupert Sutherland)
- Victoria University of Wellington (John Townend)
- University of Otago (Virginia Toy)
- University of Auckland Institute of Earth Science and Engineering (Peter Malin)
- University of Canterbury (Tim Davies)
Research institutions mentioned in the section above currently fund New Zealand's ICDP membership. ICDP provides, through a competitive application process, both training and workshop funding to help scientists develop drilling proposals. It is rare for ICDP to fund >50% of a drilling project, so it is always necessary to consider other sources for the remaining required funds (e.g., Marsden Fund or Industry funding).
