Biogeochemistry
We are studying the chemical, physical, geological and biological processes and reactions that govern the composition of extreme environments.
We are using monitoring programmes, and laboratory and field experiments to improve our knowledge of biogeochemical cycles and their role in ecosystem functions and services.
Examples of this research include:
- Metal-microbe mineral interactions: Investigation and modelling of interactions between microorganisms, minerals and dissolved metals.
- Geothermal minerals: seeking microorganisms for the removal of heavy metals from geothermal waste waters.
- Silica Sinters in Geothermal Environments: Studying the development and microbial community of silica sinters.
