Geology of New Zealand

QMAP Terranes

A summary description of New Zealand geology based on the 1:250 000 geological map project has commenced.

The Geology of New Zealand was published as a two volume monograph in 1978 and synthesised the 1:250 000 geological mapping and associated research of the previous decades.

With the QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand project now completed, we are working towards a new monograph that will synthesise the current understanding of the geology of New Zealand. In addition we intend to deliver the same information via a web encyclopaedia.

In the interim, much of the geological information can be found within the explanatory texts that accompany the 21 QMAP geological maps that cover New Zealand.
