See the map, read the explanatory text
Expected early 2011!
The map will be available as a low resolution image, a high resolution image in the geological map catalogue, or as GIS data through the South Victoria Land webmap. The explanatory text accompanying the map will describe the geological map units, their origins and the geological history of the area.
Background
In 2008, GNS Science gained funding from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology to construct a new 1:250 000 geological map of South Victoria Land. The map brings together the wealth of geological information collected in the Dry Valleys, southern Ross Sea, Ross Island and Royal Society Range areas of the New Zealand Antarctic territory. Geological map information was first collected in this area by Hartley Ferrar as part of Scott’s Discovery Expedition (1901-1904).
Methodology
Existing geological data sources included over 50 years of detailed work by scientists from around the world, and a series of 1: 50 000 maps published in New Zealand. Limited new fieldwork was undertaken in late 2008 in areas identified as lacking in geological data.
