1:1 000 000 Geological Map of New Zealand

Geological map of NZ

The 2nd edition Geological Map of New Zealand at 1:1M is in progress and scheduled for completion in 2014. This scale is ideal for national level viewing and will be available in printed map and as a webmap application.

Background

In 2009, GNS Science began the compilation of new 1:1 000 000 (1:1M) geological maps covering New Zealand. These two maps aim to replace the 1st edition, published in the 1972, and draw extensively from the completed QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand.

Methodology

Each of the 21 QMAP geological maps will be simplified suitable for reproduction at 1:1M. This involves redrawing and smoothing of complicated geological boundaries, removing small or very thin polygons and dense clusters of fault and other data.

Construction

The 1:1M geological map is following established technical specifications and the international geological map interchange standard GeoSciML will be adopted.

The map is hosted on a server in Wellington and can be accessed using web browser software from anywhere in the world with internet connectivity.

Updating

The 1:1M maps will be updated periodically as new data and interpretation become available.
